It's a remote backup tool that encrypts and copies your files up to the Mozy server. I used to have a bunch of backup scripts to copy files between different computers in my house. But every time I changed something on the network I always forgot or was too lazy to keep the scripts current. Mozy is much easier to setup and is better because the backups are offsite in case something drastic happens at the house. Mozy has been really easy to setup on my PC, my Mom's, and Jessica's. I had one small issue on my laptop but their tech support was easy to reach via email and sent me a new version that fixed the problem. The program seems to be really well behaved (doesn't suck up a bunch of resources), is easy to configure, and is free for up to 2 GB of data. Click any of the links to give Mozy a try. Clicking those links uses my referrer code and gets me an additional .25 GB for each active referral. Thanks! Sorry David, no Mac version yet.... mikel 2007-01-09T07:59:50-06:00 Daylight Savings Time Change - Windows Update http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2007/01/daylight_saving.html While I was looking for a Windows Update I noticed a non-critical update to keep Windows current with the upcoming DST changes this spring. Get this patch installed before March. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928388... mikel 2007-01-09T07:50:31-06:00 Web development Firefox addons http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/12/web_development_1.html I've been doing more web development lately and Kyle asked me for a list of my favorite Firefox addons for web development. HTML Validator - I'm not one of those people who says every page has to validate, but keeping things as valid as possible helps me be consistent in writing the HTML and I find it easier to debug other issues when everything is valid. IE Tab - Good for quickly testing sites in IE. View Source Chart - A little better than the standard View Page Source. Web Developer - Lots of good stuff, my favorite is the outline tables and table cells.... mikel 2006-12-04T20:26:42-06:00 High school summer jobs http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/11/high_school_sum.html Paul Graham has an interesting essay about creating wealth. In it he mentioned something I told the students at Delphi High School but said it much better than I did. Will technology increase the gap between rich and poor? It will certainly increase the gap between the productive and the unproductive. That's the whole point of technology. With a tractor an energetic farmer could plow six times as much land in a day as he could with a team of horses. But only if he mastered a new kind of farming. I've seen the lever of technology grow visibly in my own time. In high school I made money by mowing lawns and scooping ice cream at Baskin-Robbins. This was the only kind of work available at the time. Now high school kids could write software or design web sites. But only some of them will; the rest will still be scooping ice cream. http://www.paulgraham.com/gap.html... mikel 2006-11-12T12:03:03-06:00 Delphi High School career day http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/11/delphi_high_sch.html I got to speak at career day at Delphi High School in Mrs. Kinzie's class today. I talked about IT careers in general and more specifically about software development and starting a small business. If any of the kids are googling me and find this page, here are some links to things I talked about. Purdue Computer and Information Technology Alice - good for creating 3D games and movies Visual Studio Express - free versions of the software development tool I use a lot in my work. Nvu - Free HTML editor I've turned off comments because of all the comment spam. I'll turn it back on once I upgrade the blog software. But until then, email me if you have any questions.... mikel 2006-11-03T15:59:40-06:00 Time Zone List http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/10/time_zone_list.html Here's a list of all the time zones available in XP and Vista. http://blogs.msdn.com/kathykam/articles/776458.aspx I'll need this for a project in the future.... mikel 2006-10-05T07:45:21-06:00 NSIS detecting .NET Framework version http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/09/nsis_detecting.html I found out how to detect a specific version of the .NET Framework using NSIS. Not only does it detect the version but also downloads the dotnetfx.exe setup program without directing the user to a website. It even has a nice progress bar of the download process. http://nsis.sourceforge.net/DotNET I would probably change it to download from our site in case Microsoft moves the dotnetfx.exe that is needed.... mikel 2006-09-28T08:18:48-06:00 DelMar Alarm Clock - PDA version http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/09/delmar_alarm_cl_1.html The PDA version of DelMar Alarm Clock is finally available on download.com. You don't need to be registered to view this page though. You do need to register to submit something and once you are registered they will email you when new requests come in that match your type of business.... mikel 2006-09-08T12:37:31-06:00 New PDA software site http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/08/new_pda_softwar.html Kyle found a new place to list PDA software. PDATopSoft.com DelMar Alarm Clock is listed there now as well. The signup process was pretty simple, the percent of the sale they take is lower than others, and they listed the software immediately. http://pdatopsoft.com/PocketPC/DelMar-Alarm-Clock... mikel 2006-08-20T14:40:55-06:00 DelMar Alarm Clock http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/08/delmar_alarm_cl.html We released a new product last Friday. DelMar Alarm Clock is a simple alarm clock program. It has some pretty cool features, but it pretty much does one thing and does it really well. There is a version for the PC and the Pocket PC. I've been using it for a couple of months now but on Friday we finally got everything together to release it for sale. Somehow the Austrian site pocket.at picked up DelMar Alarm Clock and we've already had several downloads from Austria, Germany, and Switzerland. It is already listed on Handango.com and will soon be available from download.com and pocketgear.com. I'll update the links when those sites update. Of course, you can purchase it directly from us at delmarit.com/ditalarmclock [Update] DelMar Alarm Clock won't be available on pocketgear.com. They require we create a custom exe that points to their site. It's just not worth the extra time to do that. Handango has been great because we can give them the same installers that are available on our site and everywhere else. [Update 2] DelMar Alarm Clock is now listed in Pocket PC Magazine.... mikel 2006-08-14T09:35:43-06:00 CEAppManager Version http://www.mjberger.com/archives/2006/08/ceappmanager_ve.html If you are creating a setup program for a Pocket PC/ Windows Mobile application that installs on the desktop using ActiveSync and get an error message like Application manager cannot install this application on your mobile device due to an invalid setup file. Reinstall and try again. Then the problem might not be with your CAB but with the ini file passed to CEAppMgr.exe. I had set the version to 1.1 because that's the version of the application I was installing. But after a couple hours of searching I found out that the version is for ini file. It failed with a value of 1.1 and worked with 1.0. [CEAppManager] Version = 1.0 ; this is the CeAppMgr .ini version, not the app version http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnce21/html/appin21.asp... mikel 2006-08-11T10:28:16-06:00
