Software Apprenticeships
Rob Walling has an excellent article about software apprenticeships. I've always thought of how I went through graduate school as an apprenticeship and then starting DelMar IT with Kyle as a continuation of that. I've sort of moved up to the position of journeyman and ,hopefully, it will work out that we'll find some good undergrad or grad students to come on as apprentices after graduation. Of course short term interns fit into this model as well. But I don't really think of them as appretices since they aren't around long enough.
I thought this quote from the article was particulary insightful/funny.
When you study theory there are no mistakes: code is bug-free, APIs are perfect, and operating systems never, ever crash. That's why there's not a "blue screen" shape in UML.

Web development resources
I've been doing a bit of playing around with JavaScript for a potential new project. The web developer and IE Tab extensions to Firefox have been really helpful.
IE Tab Make sure to get the additional package.
I won't be the last one on the AJAX bandwagon. I was just having a conversation with a CPT 355 student the other day about AJAX. It's funny how what was uncool (client side JavaScript) can be cool when given a new name.

.NET CF 2.0
Download link for the .NET Compact Framework 2.0
Note that it says you need the new ActiveSync 4.0 to update the device but I'm not sure why you would. But Microsoft recommends you only use ActiveSync 4.0 to connect to a Windows Mobile 5 device. So does that mean you can't use .NET cf 2.0 on older devices? I'll have to test it out this weekend.
